All too often we take simple things for granted. One example is our vision. It is truly amazing that we are able to open our eyes and an amazing world of sights awaits us.

Sometimes the system doesn’t work so well and certain problems can result.

If the back surface of the eye, the retina is torn, you might feel as if a curtain has come down over your sight. It might be more difficult to make out objects that are way off to the side. This condition can be caused by many things and will need immediate treatment.

Blurry vision can be the result of many things. If you have a stroke in the area of the brain which controls your vision, you can have difficulty seeing things. Sometimes a migraine headache can affect the visual areas of the brain and cause blurry vision, wavy lines and pain from bright light. High blood sugars seen in diabetics can degrade the ability of the eyes to take in light. Glaucoma, which is the result of increased pressure within the eye, can make your vision worse. Cataracts can make your night vision worse.

Many other conditions can affect our vision. Even certain medications such as Viagra, cholesterol lower drugs to name a few, can affect our eyes.

If you notice any change in your vision, especially if it is sudden, you should see an eye doctor right away. If you can’t get in (say after hours) go to the emergency room. Many times it will not be vision threatening. However, because there are those unusual cases which could result in blindness, it is worth it to make the trip to the ER.
