Marijuana is becoming legal in more and more states. Some advocates for marijuana claim that is without serious side effects which is not true. On the other hand those who are dead set against marijuana maintain that it has no medical use whatsoever which is also not true.

Based on sound studies there is evidence that marijuana helps with nausea chronic pain and symptoms of multiple sclerosis. There is no reliable data as of yet that marijuana can treat seizures, depression or PTSD. This doesn’t mean that marijuana has no usefulness in these diseases only that we don’t know yet.

What we do know is that regular marijuana use increases psychotic symptoms including increased risk for schizophrenia. Driving while stoned has been shown to be a risk factor obviously for car accidents. Chronic marijuana use has been associated with cannabis hyperemesis syndrome which is an illness in which regular marijuana users develop intractable vomiting. There is some research which suggests that long term marijuana use will increase the likelihood of developing dementia.

So both those in favor of or against marijuana legalization really need to pay close attention to the results of well conducted research studies. Marijuana users should know what the risks and benefits are of smoking or otherwise consuming marijuana.o
